Why Generac Dominates in Hunterdon County

Generac Is the Standby Generator You See on Almost Every Rural Driveway Here

Walk down almost any rural road in Readington, Tewksbury, Clinton Township, or Union Township and you'll see the same recognizable aluminum enclosure sitting off the side of the house. That's a Generac. According to the company, roughly 8 out of 10 home standby generators installed in the US are Generac, and in Hunterdon County's rural residential market that number is even higher.

Two things drove that dominance locally. First, Generac was the first company to bring affordable whole-home standby generators to market, which mattered when the Hurricane Irene and Superstorm Sandy install waves hit Hunterdon in 2011-2013. Second, the Generac dealer and parts network is the strongest in NJ by a wide margin, which means faster parts turnaround when repairs are needed. Both factors compound: the more Generacs in the ground, the deeper the local service knowledge gets.

We install and service the entire Generac residential lineup. Guardian series air-cooled units for essentials and mid-size whole-home installs, Protector series liquid-cooled units for larger homes and light commercial. Both come with Mobile Link cellular monitoring standard on current-model units.

Which Generac Model Fits Your Home?

Every Generac install we do starts with a real NEC load calculation on your actual home. But if you're at the research stage and want a starting-point recommendation on which model to look at, answer 3 quick questions on the right.

This isn't a substitute for a load calc, and the recommendation may shift once we run real numbers on your house. But it's a reasonable starting point for the conversation.

The Generac Lineup, Simplified

Guardian Series vs Protector Series: The Real Difference

Generac's residential lineup splits into two series that overlap in size but differ in cooling method, price tier, and best-fit customer.

Guardian Series

Air-Cooled Whole-Home Standby

Air-Cooled · G-Force Engine

Generac's flagship residential lineup. Air-cooled G-Force engines pressure-lubricated for reliability under real load. The volume workhorse of the residential standby market. Every whole-home Generac we've installed on a rural Hunterdon well-and-septic property in the last 10 years was a Guardian.

All-aluminum enclosure with RhinoCoat powder coating, cellular Mobile Link monitoring standard on current models, Smart Management Modules built in on 22 kW and up for load-managed installs.

Best For

Most Hunterdon County homes. Rural, suburban, and everything short of estate-scale.

Protector Series

Liquid-Cooled Premium Standby

Liquid-Cooled · Larger Engine

Generac's premium residential and light commercial line. Liquid-cooled engines run cooler under sustained load, so they handle longer outages and higher continuous power draw more comfortably than air-cooled. Quiet-Test mode runs the weekly exercise at a lower, quieter speed to reduce neighborhood noise.

All-aluminum enclosure, cellular Mobile Link standard, UL 2200 listed, and can be installed as close as 18 inches from the structure on 22, 27, 32, and 38 kW models per NFPA 37 setback.

Best For

Larger homes (5,000+ sq ft), estate properties, hobby farms with multiple structures, or homes with sustained high loads (pool, hot tub, EV, workshop).

Guardian Series Sizing

Which Guardian kW Rating Fits Your Home

The right kW rating depends on load, not square footage alone. That said, here's the practical breakdown of what each model can realistically handle in a typical Hunterdon County home.

Size
Best Fit
What It Realistically Runs
10kW
Small Essentials
Fridge, sump pump, small well, boiler blower, lights, Wi-Fi, phones. Not enough for central AC or heat pump under real load.
14kW
Larger Essentials
All of the above plus small AC unit or heat pump, larger well pump. Works well for a smaller HC home wanting central HVAC coverage.
18kW
Small Whole-Home
Full home with a 3-ton AC, well pump, septic ejector, kitchen appliances. The lower tier of whole-home coverage. Good for 2,000-2,500 sq ft.
22kW
Standard Whole-Home
The most popular size in HC. Handles 3-4 ton AC, heat pump, well, septic, kitchen, home office, and everything typical for a 2,500-3,500 sq ft house.
24kW
Slight Upsize
Same footprint as 22, slightly more capacity for homes running a 5-ton AC or dual heat pumps. Common upgrade path from an aging older Guardian.
26kW
Larger Whole-Home
Larger homes with EV charger, hot tub, pool equipment, workshop. Uses Smart Management Modules to handle multiple large loads without overload.
28kW
Max Air-Cooled
The largest air-cooled generator on the market. For large homes wanting maximum air-cooled capacity before stepping up to liquid-cooled Protector series.
Cooling Method Matters

Air-Cooled or Liquid-Cooled: What Actually Matters

The single biggest technical decision after kW sizing is air-cooled vs liquid-cooled. Both cool the engine but differently, and the difference shows up in real ways during a multi-day outage.

Air-cooled units use fan-driven airflow across the engine block and cylinder heads. Simpler, lighter, less expensive, and perfectly adequate for the vast majority of residential installs. This is the entire Guardian series.

Liquid-cooled units circulate coolant through a radiator like a car engine. Run cooler under sustained load, handle longer outages and higher power draw better, and produce cleaner, more stable output. This is the entire Protector series.

Air-Cooled: Simpler, Volume Choice

Runs at 3,600 RPM. Air filter, spark plugs, and oil are the main service items. Adequate for outages up to a few days at typical residential load. Every Generac Guardian is air-cooled.

Liquid-Cooled: Sustained High Load

Larger engine, radiator, coolant system. Better temperature stability during multi-day outages under heavy load. Quieter at exercise. More components to service. Every Generac Protector is liquid-cooled.

Practical HC Reality

95% of Hunterdon County home installs are air-cooled Guardian units in the 18-26 kW range. That's the sweet spot for typical rural well-and-septic homes. Liquid-cooled Protector makes sense for larger properties or sustained commercial-scale loads.

Real Talk

The Honest Case for Generac (and Where They Fall Short)

Generac is not the only brand we install, and it's not always the right pick. Here's the honest breakdown.

Where Generac Shines

  • Deepest NJ dealer network. Fastest parts turnaround when repairs are needed. That's not marketing, that's a real advantage.
  • Full model range from 10 kW to 80 kW. Same manufacturer for essentials-only through commercial-scale, so parts and training carry across.
  • Mobile Link cellular monitoring standard. Genuinely useful. Better than Kohler's OnCue in our experience for reliability.
  • Smart Management Modules built in. 22 kW+ models handle up to 4 AC loads without extra hardware. Makes load management installs cleaner.
  • 26 kW is the largest air-cooled on the market. Big whole-home coverage without stepping up to a much more expensive liquid-cooled unit.

Where Generac Falls Short

  • Build quality trails Kohler on premium units. Kohler's 14RCA and 20RCA feel heavier and quieter in comparable size. Real difference on sustained runtime.
  • Noise level at exercise cycle. Standard Guardian units run around 65-70 dBA at 23 feet. Not loud, but audible. Protector's Quiet-Test mode helps significantly.
  • Controller board failures happen. Not common, but when they do it's a several-hundred-dollar parts cost. Extended runtime is generally reliable, but the controller is a known weak point.
  • Skipping annual service kills them fast. Air-cooled units are less forgiving of missed service than liquid-cooled. Annual service isn't optional on a Guardian.
Refreshing Honesty

Who Should Not Get a Generac

We install Generac more than any other brand, and we still won't pretend it's right for every situation. There are homes and use cases where Kohler, Cummins, or something else is the smarter pick. Being honest about that up front saves the customer a lot of pain later.

If any of these apply to you, we'll talk through alternatives during the site survey. We install and service Kohler and Cummins too, and the full brand landscape is worth understanding before committing.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Generac Generators

Depends on your home size, your loads, and whether you want essentials-only or whole-home coverage. For most Hunterdon County homes on well and septic with central HVAC, the sweet spot is a Guardian 22 kW or 24 kW. Smaller ranch or older cape homes may do fine with 14 kW or 18 kW. Larger homes with EV, hot tub, or pool typically go 26 kW or step up to Protector series. A real NEC load calculation is the only way to know for sure. Use the configurator above as a starting point.

Cooling method is the main difference. Guardian is air-cooled, 10-28 kW range, the volume workhorse. Protector is liquid-cooled, 22-80 kW range, premium build for larger homes and light commercial. For 95% of Hunterdon County residential installs, Guardian is the right pick. Protector makes sense for larger estates, high sustained loads, or noise-sensitive locations.

Standard 5-year limited warranty on residential Guardian and 5-year / 2,000-hour on Protector. Coverage includes parts and labor on manufacturer defects. Extended warranties are available through Generac and can be a smart purchase depending on your usage. We help you understand what's covered before purchase.

No. Warranty registration is what matters, and any qualified installer can register the unit with Generac in your name. We handle the registration as part of our installation process. What matters more than "authorized dealer" status is whether your installer will still be around and responsive when you need service in 5, 10, or 15 years.

Standard Guardian units run about 65-70 dBA at 23 feet during normal operation, which is comparable to normal conversation. The weekly exercise cycle is 10 minutes at that level. Protector series with Quiet-Test mode runs the exercise at a lower, quieter speed. During an actual outage under load, both are audible from neighboring properties.

Yes, on current-generation units. Older Guardian units used Wi-Fi that dropped when your house Wi-Fi went down. Current units ship with cellular Mobile Link that works over LTE, so monitoring stays live during utility outages as long as cellular coverage is up. This is a real upgrade over older units.

Yes, this is a large portion of our repair and annual service business. We work on Guardian, Protector, and older Generac models regardless of who installed them.
